I served with the Saint Joseph Worker Program in Los Angeles, California from 2020–2021 as a Case Manager at Homeboy Industries. My year of service took place during the height of COVID, a time when so much felt uncertain and overwhelming, and there was so much disconnection built into everyday life. I feel truly grateful to have spent that year as a Notre Dame Volunteer where I was surrounded (masked up and socially distant) by a community at my placement site that showed up for each other day in and day out in the "no-matter-whatness" of life. I learned about the importance of being fully present for the person in front of you. My year taught me that human connection, faith, and community are what carry you through even the most unexpected circumstances.
Some of my favorite memories were exploring the Los Angeles area with my community members, taking weekend camping trips to surrounding national parks, community dinners where we each took turns to share our favorite budget-friendly meals with one another, and of course, being a part of the Homeboy community, where I learned of the power of kinship and mutuality always.
Today, I work in Development at WE CAN, a nonprofit on Cape Cod that supports women through legal, financial, business, career, and personal development services. In my role, I help ensure that our programs are sustainable so women can thrive. The lessons I learned during my year of service continue to guide me in both my work and my life.
During my service year, I came to understand just how vital nonprofit organizations are in providing social services to our communities, and how essential it is to support their missions holistically. I saw firsthand how community members give in different ways, whether through time, talent, or treasure. As a case manager, I had the incredible opportunity to witness the direct impact of services. Over time, I grew increasingly intrigued by the behind-the-scenes work and how every part of an organization comes together to fulfill its mission. Now, working in fundraising, I have a whole new perspective on the inner workings of nonprofits and a deep appreciation for the generosity of supporters who invest in the wellbeing of their community.
