A Letter from the Desk of Sam
This month's letter is from Sam Frey, NDMV Development and Alumni Associate and NDMV Alum 2021-2022. Enjoy something a little different this month! Sam wrote a poem to express NDMV's story and legacy.
Happy June!
When the NDMV staff gathered in person recently, one of our days was focused on telling our story. We talked about our personal stories and the collective story of Notre Dame Mission Volunteers. After writing a personal “I Am From” poem, I felt moved to write a “We Are From” poem that reflects something true about this organization: we are not defined by one story or by one person's effort, but a collection of dedicated people who see a need and help fill it.
From the miracle of Saint Julie Billiart rising to walk, and with her, the birth of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, to the volunteers who serve in our communities today, every person who has ever been part of NDMV has played an important role in who we are today. I hope you enjoy the poem and gain a greater understanding of who we are from it:
We Are From
We are from miracles.
We are from sisters who follow their hearts and never give up on their dreams.
We are from women who act, not just preach.
We are from resilient communities that get by with little.
We are from people who seek purpose through serving others.
We are from fighters who know it takes more than one punch.
We are from sunflower fields and watering cans.
We are from gardeners who plant seeds that they may never see bloom.
We are from go-getters and yes-sayers.
We are from justice-seekers and change-makers.
We are from bridge-builders who meet people where they are.
We are from communities that welcome all and abandon none.
